Behind every negative emotion is a part seeking your care

Not Just Insight—Transformation: The Power of Internal Family Systems

What is it?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy helps you get to know different parts of you such as the perfectionist, the achiever, or the one who shuts down. Instead of trying to suppress or ignore those parts, we gently turn towards them with curiosity.  As you begin to understand what each part is trying to do for you, they often start to soften.  This helps you access a deeper, steadier sense of self that can listen, respond with compassion, and lead from a place of calm. Over time, this process helps heal the roots of emotional pain, allowing you to move through life with more ease and authenticity.

How does it work?

We start by identifying a part, which may present as a feeling or somatic sensation.  I might then invite you to turn inward, noticing how the part responds to your attention.  Over time, with gentle, attuned facilitation, IFS can help heal vulnerable young parts, retrieving them from painful past experiences where they got stuck.  As young parts begin to release the burdens of the pain they carry, the system reconstillates around this new sense of freedom and ease.  Protective parts often then adjust their roles, leveraging their gifts towards thriving, rather than mere survival.

What can it help with?

IFS is a robust, versatile model that can treat practically any issue – from anxiety to eating disorders to complex trauma.  It is suitable for all ages, from children to adults.  It is also helpful in couples work, in that it helps partners to track and transform the deeper motivations underlying their own and their partner’s interactions.  IFS is humanizing and compassionate and depathologizing, seeing suffering as the product of adaptive strategies parts took on that may have outgrown their usefulness.

IFS is…

The gentle art of turning towards, rather than away from, your feelings.

Meeting the protective superheroes within you, uncovering their gifts and grit

Rescuing inner young ones from mortifying classrooms and lonely dinner tables

Moving from inner dissonance towards harmony

Coming home to self-compassion

Growing into Self-leadership

Becoming the parent you always wanted

Getting to know yourself in a whole new way

My IFS Background

IFS takes training and experience to master.  Here’s what I’ve invested in learning this model:

More than 150 hours of IFS training with IFSCA (IFS Counseling Association)

CourseworkStepping Stones, Stepping Deeper and the Advanced Weekend (content equivalent of IFSI levels 1, 2 and 3)

Nuance and Attunement in the IFS Model – 16 week training with Stephanie Mitchell on using IFS with clients with complex or highly protected systems

Eight Years of Study in Core Shamanism and a professional certification in Applied Shamanic Counseling from the Foundation of the Sacred Stream.  (Because IFS integrates Shamanic principles, this background is deeply relevant for an IFS informed clinician.)

More than 100 hours experience as support staff for IFSCA, supervising practice sessions and providing feedback to clinicians new to the model.
